Turducken

I'm fascinated by the turducken. Yes, it sounds like a swear word, but it isn't. Apparently it's a chicken inside a duck inside a turkey. I'm sure this requires a lot of planning & finding just the right size of bird. What I'm unsure of who thought that this was necessary?

Who ate turkey & thought "Hmmm, that just wasn't filling enough, I need some chicken" Apparently one serving of this thing is 1733 calories & 111 grams of fat. Has anyone tried this before?

Other items of note from wikipedia:

  • Gurduken: goose stuffed with turkey, stuffed with duck, stuffed with chicken
  • Turduckendorpheail: turducken stuffed with cornish game hen, which is stuffed with pheasant, which is stuffed with quail.
  • Osturduckncorpheail: Ostrich stuffed with turkey which is stuffed with duck which is stuffed with chicken.
  • An English chef called Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall invented the turgoduckmaguikenantidgeonck which consists of turkey, goose, duck, mallard, guineafowl, chicken, pheasant, partridge, pigeon, woodcock
  • The largest recorded nested bird roast is 17 birds, attributed to a royal feast in France in the 19th century:
a bustergophechiduckneaealcockidgeoverwingailusharkolanbler (originally called a RĂ´ti Sans Pareil, or "Roast without equal") - a bustard stuffed with a turkey, a goose, a pheasant, a chicken, a duck, a guinea fowl, a teal, a woodcock, a partridge, a plover, a lapwing, a quail, a thrush, a lark, an Ortolan Bunting and a Garden Warbler. The final bird is small enough that it can be stuffed with a single olive; it also suggests that, unlike modern multi-bird roasts, there was no stuffing or other packing placed in between the birds. This dish probably could not be recreated in the modern era as many of the listed birds are now protected species
  • Happy thanksgiving everyone!

Turducken is a much beloved favorite of John Madden. He tends to wax poetic about it during football games and interviews etc.

Sometimes you just need to say, "Enough is enough!" Can you imagine a life where your destiny is not just to be eaten for dinner, but to be stuffed inside TWO other birds (which may have even been your friends in the barnyard days)?

I'm no vegetarian, but it does seem like our culinary exploits have taken a bizarre turn here...

Holy crap! I had no idea that's what turducken was! I thought it was some (as disgusting as this is going to sound) meat-blend type of thing. Like, like...I don't know. But certainly not something as disturbing as a bird stuffed inside another bird!!! Aaagh!

I don't think even Sookie would have been crazy enough to attempt that.

Unbelieveable! All of it really, but particularly that last one. Wonder how long that must have taken. Can you imagine? All those birds set out on the butcher's block, being arranged by size? EW!

My husband has tried the turducken and just labeled it 'weird'. Me? No thank you.

I despite duck and goose (I have asten both but unless I'ms tarving plan to never again) so the turducken is not for me, but as a practcing carnivore I'm all for more meat combinations.

maybe a bacon, steak and elk tenderloin casserole.

Or a burgmutton. or a sausagechop.

Good GRAVY. Now there were some people with WAY too much time on their hands. It reminds me of a faux commercial from SNL where they wrap a taco in a bigger soft taco. But wait, that's not all. And it ends up a million fattening things all smooshed together and then wrapped in a pizza, dipped in pancake batter and deep fried or something ridiculous like that.

It's a heart attack wrapped in a stroke and then deep fried!!!!
